I. ATS Theory
ATSE is a device that dual power or multi-power are selected and transferred
to load power supply from one of circuits according to actual situation. The main
power element is automatic switch power, short for ATS and abbreviation of Automatic transfer system. It is mainly installed in emergency power supply system and is used for transfer of dual power, which is comprised of switch and control system.
II. ATS Concept
ATS is applied to automatic transfer between main power supply (mains supply) and standby power supply (genset or other power supply), with reliable operation, simple use, compact structure, excellent performance and favorable price. ATS control system monitors the operation status of main power supply and standby power supply. When the main power supply is detected fault (i.e.: any phase stopped, under-voltage, deviations of under-voltage and frequency), the control system would give out action commands automatically, then start the standby power supply and transfer load to standby power supply. When the main power supply is returned, the control system will transfer the load to main power supply system automatically. Both ATS and self-starting diesel generator sets compose automatic emergency power supply system, which can transfer the first-stage load, such as, emergency lighting, emergency power supply, fire fighting equipment, to the genset after the main power supply is shutdown, with the emergency power supply equipment in important places as hospitals, banks, tele-communications, airports, broadcasting station as well as hotels.
III. Classification and Advantages & Disadvantages
1. Classification
Dual power transfer electrical equipment for domestic market has four kinds:
The first kind: ATSE of main transfer composed by contactor (dual power ATSE)
The second kind: ATSE composed by breaker
The third kind: Products of dual power transfer composed by electro-load switch
The fourth kind: ATSE of class PC (one-piece)
It can be divided into class CB (short-circuit overload protection), class MC (short-circuit non-overload protection), class PC (non-short-circuit overload protection) according to features of ATS switch.
2. Advantages & Disadvantages
1) ATSE composed by contactor: The advantage is low price and the disadvantages are that the coil is power-wasting to be burned down for long-term electricity, the connecting capability and breaking capability is low with contractor easy to vibrate, puddle welding as well as low reliability.
2) Class CB is composed of two MCCBs, interlocking conversion equipment, mounting base, etc. Advantages: thermal overload protection, short circuit protection, easy manufacturing and low costs. Disadvantages: slower transfer action (more than 1.5s), lower service life, fault liability (such as thread slipping). Once the mechanical interlocking fails, it will be bad for power supply. After thermal tripping, only manual reset can work, with hard maintenance, less breaking capability as well as some limits of application.
Class CB: ATSE is actually a middle of a particular product that the previous appliance component power transfer system is developed into the integrated power transfer system.
3) Load switch: ATS is composed of two load switches and electro-operation equipment. The reliable operation makes more progress than the previous two switches, but the dual power is with load and the ATS arcing system is not reasonable.
4) Class PC (one-piece) is composed of interlocking equipment, contactor arcing system, mounting base and so on, a highly effective switch of dual power transfer. Advantages: simple structure, small volume, more product specifications, safely reliable interlocking, long service life, simple operation and maintenance, with the achievement of automation, intellectualization and remote control. Disadvantages: additionally equipped with short circuit protection appliance. This type highly increases the reliability with combining the advantages of above products and overcoming inadequate of reverse effects.
